College Day

Last Friday, my advisory took a tour of UCSD. The first few hours, we were aloud to roam freely around the campus and got a personal feel for the kind of community this was. After that, we took a guided tour of the Geisel Library, dedicated to San Diegan, Theodore S. Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss.

We learned many things about the inner-workings of the college, how to get in, all the different clubs and classes and clubs and how UCSD i made up of many smaller colleges specialized for different subjects, but you can still take any class in any one of them. UCSD is defineately one of my top choices for college in the future.

Lillygol's Presentation

Lillygol's lecture gave me a new look at the Iranian government and its protesters. All we've known so far about the situation in Iran was written or drawn. But to see what the Iranian people see every day effected me deeply.

"Don't get me wrong, I love this dang country and everything about it. I love the freedoms we used to have, I love those." -George Carlin

This new insight also makes me appreciate what we have in America. That our problems are menial and that even complaining about those problems is something that makes our country great, that we can protest without being beaten and shot at.

"People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people."-V

The Iranian government controls their people, not with simple orders, expecting them to fall in line, they beat, arrest and even publicly execute those who they disagree with. They control with fear, letting people know what happens to those who protest and break the many laws written by the Ayatollah and falsely justified by religion. Feeding their people lies they will never believe (i.e. Ahmadenijad's re-election, everyone voted for Mousavi, they closed the polls halfway through the day claiming President Ahmadinejad had already won) and people still pour into the streets, knowing the risk, and fight, even lay down their lives, for their freedom.

"They may take our lives, but they will never take our freedom!" William Wallace
(I'm sorry if that was cliche, I just had to do it!)

The fact I have (and hopefully will) never have to fight like that for my freedom, I love it all the more. But knowing how the Iranian people have bravely stood up for their rights makes me feel that if the moment came, I would be ready.

The Veil

In post-Islamic Revolution Iran, women are forced to wear a veil, concealing their hair, or a chador, a head to toe cover showing only the eyes. Although some women wear the veil willingly. Their perspective on the veil derives from many different ideals of Islam and their perspective. One fact is tat a woman's bare skin and hair would cause men to have impure thoughts, or worse, act on those thoughts.

Some women still wear the veil unwillingly, feeling their rights are being violated. And with good reason. Women are denied the rights of speech, expression and the right to make their own choices. Women cannot even decide who they marry or whether they will marry him or not.

Women in Iran protest the veil as a symbol of oppression and misogyny. Others support the veil as a symbol of peace and their dedication to their faith. It is impossible to say one is more correct then the other and we must remain mindful of their faith, their laws and their choices.

Iranian Revolution

It seems as though the Iranian people lead a revolution against an oppressive leader only to see that one of their greatest supporters was only trying t enforce his own opinion as law. Ayahtolla drove out the Shaw only to become an unquestionable religious leader and separate schools, put veils on all women (and take away their rights) and turn the constitution of Islamic religion into law for Iran. these people cannot catch a break.

Dust Bowl Experience

BLAGH! PHATU! GAG! ... Sorry... dust.

There's dang ol' dust up to the roof! Billy Bob done busted his leg tryin' to ski off the roof. I'd tell ya' there's no crop left alive but... I can't see the ground. Even indoors, it's all over like a cat in a microwave! I had ta wrap this here screen in Seran Wrap to see it.

I bought a car just a while before the dust bowl came, hot pink (don't judge me!) and the dust stripped away all that paint! Every day, it seems, there's a black cloud closin' in on us and all that light just blows out when the dust comes, just like all the wheat.

They promised us a land of prosperity. I used to have acres of wheat, I was makin' record crop this season... bu one day the rain just stopped comin'... it got oddly hot and I was just thinkin' "At least we got the sunshine. But that didn't last neither.

The dust got through every crack in the house, it would get into our food and we'd just be tastin' dust. And one day, we actually just ate a big plate o' dust.

Midfulness and Perspective

Mindfulness- Consideration of the affects of your actions upon others.
Perspective- A different point of view.

Mindfulness is important because if we were to all act senselessly with no thought of our affects to others (which most of us already do) then we would never accomplish anything and most of us would just end up getting hurt. Think before you act and the whole world will prosper.

All people of the world see the world from a different point of view. Some of us are optimistic, some are negative, some rich, some poor. The world is not just bland black and white because we all see it a different way. The world is always changing and so is our view. Be willing to see new things and try to see things from other people's point of view.

Wonder & Evidence

Two habits of the human mind, rudimentary to our way of life. Wonder- to imagine. If we were never to wonder, then the most imaginative minds in history would never turn their thoughts into inventions such as the airplane and the car and the computer. If we never wondered, it would be a wonder that we were still around.

Evidence- proof, items to prove a point. Without evidence, no true story would be proven, no one would believe one another. And probably the most important, our legal system would crumble.

These things are the cornerstones of the human mind and therefore, the cornerstones of our way of life.
